 A-League Round 23

Sydney FC vs Brisbane Roar

Allianz Stadium

Kick off: 7:50pm

Preview

After a tough couple of results in the ACL and the loss to Newcastle, this will be an important game for Sydney FC to get back to winning ways. Brisbane have been in patchy form so far this season, and Sydney have managed to score three times in each of the two meetings. Sydney will be without their two starting fullbacks, Wilkshire and Zullo, which may reduce the club's ability to play with width. However, Brisbane will also be without a number of players, with an extensive outs list including Theo, North and Papadopoulos (but not for match fixing). All of these outs at the back mean that Sydney will hopefully be able to create a number of chances.

Another loss here could really shatter our confidence going into the finals series. The losses in newcastle and the acl really hurt us. I'm hoping we turn that all around and smash this team 4-0 because they really are terrible

Both Zullo and Wilkshire out.

So Carney and Retre in the full back positions?

Fabio Ferreira primed for first start in Sydney FC colours

Sydney FC winger Fabio Ferreira is in line to make his first start for his new club when the Sky Blues face Brisbane Roar at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.

The Portuguese winger is understood to be a strong chance to make his first appearance in the starting line-up with three first team regulars battling fatigue and fitness concerns. It's understood Ferreira is likely to start in place of one of Alex Brosque, Milos Ninkovic or potentially Adrian Mierzejewski just four days after the Sky Blues played against Kashima Antlers away in the Asian Champions League.

The travelling squad only arrived back in Sydney on Thursday morning after an overnight flight from Japan. Brosque and Mierzejewski played 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw with Kashima and will have to prove their fitness on Friday's final training session before the match against the Roar.

Ninkovic did not play against the Antlers, spared from the travel due to a minor muscle injury sustained during the Sky Blues' 2-1 defeat to Newcastle Jets a fortnight ago and a decision whether to start the Serbian playmaker won't likely be decided until close to match day.

Brazilian striker Bobo was another who remained in Sydney and is set to start but with his three supporting attackers uncertain to start, Ferreira is looking increasingly likely to make his first appearance in the first 11 for Sydney FC.

It's a very important game, we have to win and I believe we are going to win to get another step forward to where we want," Ferreira said. "

Alongside Ninkovic and Bobo, Brandon O'Neill, David Carney and Michael Zullo did not travel to Japan and are all likely to start to provide fresh legs for the Sky Blues on Saturday.

"We have been training with the ones that didn't travel and the few players that stayed back as well," Ferreira said. "We all stayed behind, at least we are going to be fresher than the others and that's going to help the team. "

The former Central Coast Mariners and Adelaide United winger joined Sydney FC as a free agent in February but has only made two short appearances, amounting to just four minutes and is determined to work his way into the first team.

"I just have to keep working and wait for the opportunity. Obviously I came in the middle of the season, the team is strong, it's set up. I want to play more, I want to work hard and give everything I can. When it comes to my opportunity I want to work hard and claim my spot."

My predicted line up

---------------Redmayne-------------

Retre ----- Buijs --- Wilkinson---Warland

---------O'Neill ---------Brilliante--------

Ferreira ------- Kalik ----------Carney

-----------------BOBO--------------------

I can see Zuvella playing for Brilliante as well because Brilliante's played nearly every game. I was really impressed by his performance against Kashima away (which is no easy gig), he didn't look out of place. But I doubt Arnie will do that

Carney will play LB and the front 4 will be Ferreira, Adrian, Ninko & Bobo

Zuvela was cramping up after 80 minutes the other night, no way he starts.

That's 4 changes from the other night and when you include Retre at RB that's 3 players outside of the preferred 11 starting. Arnie's not making any more changes than that.

Get Ferreira on the pitch running straight at the Roar.

Bobo will have a field day.

Fabio has pace to burn and can definitely hit a decent cross.

I think if he does start we will win easily

Ferreira is not the answer. Bog average player who doesn't have the pace or ability he somehow gets credited with.

And Carney at LB means we lose pace and width and tracking back.

Except Carney has played there for the HAL games Zullo has missed.

Ninko still has an injury cloud around him apparently. Hopefully he plays but i hope we dont rush him back because then he will be out for longer. Just like what happened to Zullo

Yeah theres no point risking Ninko. Even if hes 90% Id give him another week.

Redmayne

Retre Buijs Wilkinson Zullo

Brillante O'Neill

Ferreira-Adrian-Kalik

Bobo

Bench: Cisak, Calver, Zuvela, Brosque, Simon

Big big game for us. Won 1 of our last 6. Need our mojo back

Are we likely to rest Brosque? I would think we would play him at 10 and have Kalik on the bench instead, who could come on for Brosque once he starts to tire. I can't remember what Arnie did after our previous ACL game.

@ RedKat: Zullo's out. You also seem to have completely overlooked Carney (not even on bench).

@ CountArach: I don't think Brosque has it in his legs to be able to start 2 matches in such a short time, especially after the long flight. If the game the other night was here then maybe we could get 60 minutes out of him. I would expect him to come on for Ninko after 60/65 minutes.

@eddie- I was thinking Carney. Zullo at LB has been such a consistently for a while I type it whilst thinking Carney! Otherwise we seem pretty much in agreement depending on what happens with Ninko.

Calver Buijs Wiko Retre

O'Neill Brilliante

Ferriera Brosque Carney

Bobo

For this to work Arnie NEEDS to make subs in the 60th - 70th minute.

Not worth risking Ninko, Adrian

Weird side tbh. Kalik deserved another hit out.

Very weird. Unbalanced bench as well. Should have Zuvela in place of one of the defenders.

I guess it doesn't matter in the end, there'll only be 2 subs, Simon for Bobo in the 80' & Ferreira for Brosque in the 87'.

Weird to see both Brosque and Ninkovic out there given that both are likely going to have to be subbed at some point (as said above almost certainly in the 80th+ minutes). I'd also agree that we should have Kalik on the bench.

I originally thought Zuvela should be on the bench but I reckon Retre can fill in well at CM if needed. Calver can play RB. I think that's the logic.

The problem with that is if Retre gets injured or sent off there is no midfield cover.
