Getting more activity on the site

Hey guys,

First off, sorry admins if this is something you'd rather discuss elsewhere, but I just thought it might be good to get some thoughts on how we can get some more activity on the forum. I also really don't want this to come off as whinging without suggesting anything, or just creating more work for you guys. I know that would be a side-effect if anything is done about these things, but for the moment I think it is just a valuable discussion to have.

There has been a kick-up in activity recently, or at least it seems that way to me, but it would be great to see it back to what it was a year or so ago (before the software change-over, which I think may have coincided with a general drop of interest in the A-League). I occasionally go onto other team's sites and it is clear that there has been a downturn on some of those in recent times there as well. That, as noted, is likely just part of the league being in a bit of a rut, however.

One thing I've been working on is posting the forum previews for every game, and that format seems to be working for ensuring regular conversation (or so it seems to me). I've messages James and Jubal about getting the rights to put this on the front of the site as well (which would include links to the forum thread), which may help for getting more people on the site. Once that is in place, I'd love to see the Cove or SFCU's twitter account tied to posts on the front page, because currently the Cove's account has 3500 followers but is pretty much dormant. There's quite a large SFC twitter community already, and we could tap into that by using those avenues. I'm not sure how feasible this is, but I'd love to see it happen.

As for other ideas, I've been wondering if the forum layout could be streamlined a bit, but I'm not 100% sure how.

Anyway, I just thought I'd kick-start something which has been on my mind and see if people have any ideas.

Surely a simple email to the club, politely asking them to start screwing up royally would be more effective?

Posting and liking posts takes a bit of effort since the reboot.. takes me on average 30 seconds for the post to go up, and about as long for a 'like' to register (on Windows 10, and Chrome browser). But I agree, our recent success has meant we have less to whinge over..

Yeah its a combination of issues with this forum software and our hosting. It certainly needs to get fixed. Off season is coming up so will review how everything is going.

The issue for me is that I need to constantly log in despite ticking "stay logged in button". This often deters me from posting and I CBF going through the log in process.

I find that that happens when I switch devices. If I'm streaming the game I use my phone to browse the forum and when I go to post I have to log in. After that the next time I use my laptop I have to log in again.

Ahhh, this is what it is. I use three different devices to access this forum.

I basically stopped using the forum after the upgrade, when we lost the all recent / all unread posts pages. Pretty sure I'd come back as soon as there was an easy way in again.

I'm sure the admins are probably on top of this stuff, but if you are looking for candidate software for improving the forum usability in the off season, the 555-5555 music forum has started up in the last few months and is really smooth and lovely to use. In particular its tracking of where you are up to with unread posts in long discussions is very good. It runs using the open source Discourse package.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. Was pretty much online 24/7 before the upgrade but now it's just to slow and not a very enjoyable experience. Hopefully it gets back to its former glory. I need something to do at work

We'll be making more changes over the offseason.

One thing I'm considering is archiving everything up to this point in read-only format and booting up a new forum using full-featured forum software, so you can look up old threads etc on this forum but can't post to them and all new stuff goes in the new forum, 1.8 million posts is one of the main reasons this forum is so slow.

We know what the issues are, we're just trying to find ways to fix them without blowing up 13 years of Sydney FC fan history.

What about archiving everything from 2015 or earlier? Some of the old player threads still get bumped.

It's not practical to migrate anything to yet another forum platform, so it's a fresh start or nothing. I'll get links to key threads created to populate the new forum initially.

Half a season of relative inactivity and the end of the Arnie era feels like as good a time as any to bite the bullet and start afresh. It's not like we didn't handle the end of proboards, which might even have been more active than SFCU is at present.

Same for me. Having to go through the log in process every time I want to make a comment.....I CBF. And I only use one device, my phone, but it just never stays logged in.
