Sydney FC 6 – AS Pirae 0 5/6/05
A 6-0 victory over a home team would tend to indicate that the rest of the competition is likely to be a formality, and with a modicum of professional caution on the part of Sydney FC, it probably should be.

Four more goals to David Zdrilic – a delight to behold. His continued appearance in Socceroo squads has attracted some criticism over the last few years (despite his commendable scoring record), but he has certainly shown his value for his new club over the preceding couple of months.

And he was ably supported today by John Buonavoglia; Sydney FC’s ring-in striker set up a goal for his more experienced partner early on, before notching one himself just before half-time.

So, we’ve seen what our side of the draw has had to offer. What of the others?

Vanuatu’s Tafea FC gave the Wollongong Wolves a fair run for their money in the previous (ultimately redundant) World Club Championship cycle, but a Sydney FC side studded with players of international calibre will no doubt be a different proposition.

Tafea are likely to finish first in Group B, thus avoiding Sydney in the semi-final; a second successive final appearance would be a considerable achievement for the club. Nevertheless, AS Pirae will be keen to save face after today’s demolition, and should be a tough nut to crack.

In any event, it’s hard to see anything stopping Littbarski’s men now.
